Located on a plot size of 40,000 sq.m. is Azaan - a lavish home in Indore, designed by Ar. Manish Banker and the team of Pune-based Tao Architecture. The client, a young entrepreneur approached the design studio with a clear brief and vision for the home he wished to live in, with his family.
“Azaan is conceived as a residence for a family rooted in Islamic culture. The design reflects an inward focus, encapsulating its own space within a vast garden nestled between two primary blocks. One block comprises a home, office, and recreational areas, while the other serves as a residence for the joint family,” says Ar. Manish Banker, adding: “This project marked Tao’s first ever venture with a young client embracing Islamic traditions. The aim was to forge an architectural language that seamlessly merged contemporary elements with the traditional Persian essence, simultaneously addressing climatic challenges.”
Tapping into India’s rich repertoire of traditional and vernacular architecture, and climate-responsive design elements is a natural step forward for architects. Tao’s final design solution emerged as a blend of historical wisdom and contemporary sophistication. Whilst the broader purview of the built form evokes sensory perceptions of Islamic influences, a closer look suggests an intuitive understanding of the culture and traditions and their adaptation to modern living aspirations.
