AWESOME ABODES

5 hand-picked homes from Gujarat

The quintessential Indian ideology of ‘atithi devo bhava’- which means ‘treat a guest like God’ is embodied in the soul of almost every Gujarati home.

In this Gujarat-special issue, then, the top spot of Insite Story was automatically grabbed by some gorgeous Gujarati homes in Gujarat, designed by Gujarati-led design firms! Whilst we were spoilt for choice with the astounding array we scanned, we hand-picked these five for the cover story. Each of the homes selected here reflects a high level of sensitivity to the climate of the region, while respecting the clients’ needs and addressing the varied challenges posed by the site or the context.

Dipen Gada, the founder of the Vadodara-based DGA is one of the best-known designers from Gujarat. A civil engineer by training, Dipen’s innate design sensibilities have been showcased in multiple architecture and interior design projects since 1993; with his best seen in residential, retail and hospitality sectors.

Ar. Archana Shah established her own practice in 1995, as one of the first few women-led firms in Ahmedabad; along with her husband Amit Shah. The designer duo believes in designing spaces with timeless appeal; as per individual clients’ interests and adapting to socio-cultural contexts.

Architects Vijay and Vaishali Chauhan co-founded the Surat-based Crest Architects & Interior Designers in 1999. With an impressive portfolio encompassing diverse typologies, they show most mastery over residential projects.

Ar. Arpan Shah set up Modo Designs in Ahmedabad in 2002, and the firm has since completed several residential, institutional and corporate projects. A participatory, exploratory process culminates into responsive design solutions appropriate for the purpose, place and people.

Jiten Tosar & Yatin Kavaiya are the most promising and successful designer duos in Gujarat. Usine Studio co-founded in 2010 has a portfolio spanning across residential, commercial, and retail projects – and each space reflects their passion to create avant-garde design that is visually appealing and functionally sound.
