Dear Friends,

Greetings to all of you.

Mushrooming over the Internet and e-mail are so-called institutes with names similar to ours, perhaps trying to gain mileage from the goodwill, honour and professional calibre IIID has achieved. In any organisation such as ours, independence is equal, dependence is mutual and obligations reciprocal. What this esteemed institute and its past leaders have done is to canalise individual compassion into a mighty ocean of oneness that flows for the benefit of a larger section of the profession that wants attention. This is the base: connect and spread. Being together for our common good is the objective.

A professional is one who responds authentically by being credible, trustworthy, responsive and genuine, both as an individual and as a member of a professional institute like ours. Often a Chapter/ Centre Chairman is posed with a question, “What does IIID do for us?” or “What is the advantage?” This reminds me of John F. Kennedy’s famous speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”

The Institute of Indian Interior Designers, popularly known as IIID, is an organisation having its presence by way of 24 Chapters/ Centres and 6,000-plus members. Being part of a national organisation that is recognised in international forums and institutes is in itself a benefit; in APSDA (Asia Pacific Space Designers Association), we have elevated our position, which has resulted in hosting the General Assembly and Convention (to be held in February 2012 in Goa); the Lights in Goa by IIID Goa Centre was an international event, while the IIID Baroda Chapter successfully hosted the D-Cube and Ru-Ba-Ru events. The IIID Showcase Exhibition by IIID Indore Chapter; MYK Laticrete IIID Awards by IIID Hyderabad Chapter; Celebrating Women’s Day and Felicitation of Women Designers by IIID Mumbai Chapter; audio-visual presentations and talks by designers on varied subjects at various Chapters & Centres (viz. Delhi, Kolhapur, Surat, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Nashik, Chennai) – all these have added value, imparted benefits to members and, of course, have added a feather in IIID’s cap. Are these not advantages of being an IIID member?

If still not, we offer our members:

  • Insite, a monthly magazine. Our mouthpiece, this ably edited and impressively printed magazine is brimming with information
  • Our prestigious Design Awards, which will come to you very shortly with a renewed format and name – the IIID Anchor Awards
  • The IIID Copper Awards
  • The IIID Godrej Innovation Awards
  • Our bi-annual national convention, NATCON, professionally organised by IIID Jaipur Chapter
For the first time, for the advantage and benefit of our members, we are also coming up with:

  • GeNnext – a three-day event for and by our young designers
  • A bi-annual event in the form of a symposium/conference on Women in Design
  • A book on interior design and details
  • Scholarships for interior design students
  • An education and research centre in Pune by IIID Pune

The time has come when each of us must be proud to call ourselves an IIIDian. Let us contribute, share and participate to make our IIID a prized possession. Respond positively and make a difference!

With regards to my IIID family,

Ar. Bankim Dave
